General Education

1. General Education

The term General Education refers to a broad-based curriculum designed to develop the learner as a well-rounded individual, rather than training them for a specific job or profession. It emphasises:

  • Critical thinking
  • Communication skills
  • Cultural awareness
  • Numeracy and literacy
  • Scientific reasoning
  • Civic responsibility

General education is seen as developmental rather than instrumental, meaning its purpose is to foster intellectual and personal growth rather than vocational skills. Further, general education programmes are typically school- or college-based and while they may prepare students for further vocational education, they do not lead directly to employment qualifications.

There are three notable educational systems—British, American and Nordic—which shape national schooling globally, while the IB framework offers a transnational alternative focused on holistic learning.

Since the IB is not tied to a national government and is more of a curricular philosophy, calling it a framework would be more accurate. However, the British, American and Nordic models are better described as systems.

Here is a graphic distinction between educational systems and the IB framework:

2. Global Proliferation Overview:

Of the national systems, the Nordic System is the least proliferate globally due to three factors:

  • Geographic Concentration: The Nordic system is primarily used in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
  • Cultural Specificity: The Nordic sysytem is deeply tied to Nordic social values like egalitarianism and trust in public institutions.
  • Limited Export: While admired globally, the structure of the Nordic system is not widely replicated due to differing political and educational contexts.
